Have you ever wondered how search engines actually work? Or, how and why the results show the particular websites that are displayed?
If you are new to the tech world (and even if you aren’t) you may be wondering how search engines get their results. You may have even heard of something called SEO and wondered what it is. Today I will explain how search engines work and why SEO is important.
How search engines get their results
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization for your website. The more optimized your site, the higher your website will display in the results. So, having a website that uses SEO properly is extremely important.
There are many things you can do to increase where your site lands in search results and the number of people you are attracting to your website. I offer a class on optimizing your site where we dive into exactly how to optimize your website in five easy lessons.
In the meantime, here’s a quick overview of how search engines work:
- Someone types a question or phrase into a search engine such as google.
- The search engine searches it’s database for sites that have content that matches the search.
- After finding matches to the search phrase, the search engines rank the matched content according to their current algorithm, which we’ll discuss in a bit.
- If your site has matched content, it will be somewhere in this list, depending on your search engine score. The more your site matches the search engine algorithm, the higher in the list your site will land.
Although the search engines change their algorithms frequently, the consistent and unchanging core factors are functionality, user friendliness and satisfaction. They are also looking at how long visitors stay on your site, if everything is working on your site, if the site is laid out well, and if your content make sense.
To attract your ideal client to your site, you need to first know who your ideal client is and you need to write content for that niche person using language they would use.
Did you catch that? I hope so because it is important! Write for the people that you want to attract to your site. Don’t write what you think the search engines want.
And, there you have it! It really is as simple as that.
